Upcoming Ambrotype Sessions

The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel - Los Angeles, CA - Dec 1st - 9th
Opening Gallery Show “Slightly Larger Than Life, Floating on Glass” - December 6th 6-9pm

I’m thrilled to have my studio hosted at the historic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles this December. We’ll have studio days on the weekends of the 1st and 8th giving you the opportunity to make an image with me.

In addition the Hollywood Roosevelt has also given me the opportunity to, for the very first time publicly, display some of my favorite original 16x20 ambrotypes. These will include Kris Kristofferson, Questlove, Nick Offerman and many more. The show opening will be on December 6th from 6-9pm and admission is free and open to the public.

I will be hard pressed to countenance a better representation of my own skull-front topography in the coming years, so apologies in advance to other hopeful shutterbugs.

AMBROTYPE SESSION DETAILS

Popular in the late 1800’s, wetplate was quickly abandoned as less difficult and more reliable methods of portraiture were invented. Today, in harmony with old methods and equipment, I use modern lighting and technologies to capture the faces, and glimpses of the souls of a new generation.

My cameras and lenses, some more than 160 years old, were hand built by craftsmen in small shops. Made in an age before computerized manufacturing, each of my photographic instruments inherits the minor flaws of their designers. Flaws which are often revealed in the creation of perfectly imperfect images. An ambrotype portrait session includes one image on the original 16x20 sheet of glass, a digital JPG scan and hand-delivery of your finished ambrotype photo.

Portrait sessions are 2 hours long. The cost per session is $1200* for a single 16x20 glass plate portrait image. Additional photo plates within a session are $500. For example: a portrait of you and your spouse is $1200, if you both choose to take an individual portrait within the same session, each solo portrait is an additional $500.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR SESSION:

Please read before you proceed to scheduling.

Ambrotype & Tintype photography is an ART FORM and an IMPERFECT PROCESS.

  • This style of photography is a 160 year old chemical process. Minor flaws and evidence of chemistry and handling are inherent on every ambrotype.

  • Images are for personal use only. If you are interested in using an image for commercial use please contact me before scheduling to discuss licensing options.

  • The lenses and cameras are designed for individual and couples portraiture. For families, we can fit a maximum number of 5 persons in one image. Due to a very shallow depth of field, the more people in the frame, the more difficult it becomes to achieve perfect focus on each individual.

  • SPECIAL NOTES ON 16x20 AMBROTYPES: Ambrotype process requires the subject to be almost completely still. In my experience, capturing individual portraits of children under 7 and pets with this antique technology is difficult and most often impossible. If you have one of these, please email me before scheduling and we can discuss your individual in question.  If you would like additional ambrotype images made during your appointment, it’s important that I know this at least a week before your session so I can have the required materials on site. If before your session you think you’d like to add an extra image please email me.
